Obligatory "me too" post but I do have more information.  Clean
installed 9.04 64-bit three times over the past week on the same machine
with two different soundcards.  In all cases sound worked until I ran
recommended updates - then no sound.  I also lost the TV tuner card and
the ability to suspend, hibernate or shut down the machine.  aplay -l
said no sound cards detected.

policykit showed the following permissions for the sound card -

Anyone: No
Console: No
Active Console: Yes

but those permissions were not being applied.  Setting "Console" to yes
solved the problem and adding Console to shutdown options brought back
suspend and hibernate.
