Ah, sorry, I thought you meant the core gzipping in apport itself,
rather than in the GTK frontend. I saw a 'hanging' apport-gtk frontend
on mdz's laptop last week as well, so this indeed seems to be an issue.

  For very large core files (like firefox), there is no indication that
  apport is still running.  100% CPU is used while the window doesn't
  redraw.  Perhaps a fork'd gzip is needed instead?
