Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and used an ATI Radeon HD4850 not too long ago. I replaced the ATI video card with a NVIDIA GeForce 250 GTS, and noticed that when I tried to start Ubuntu again that the X server wouldn't start anymore. I was simply dumped to terminal. I had expected Ubuntu would just start and that it would detect the new NVIDIA video card, and gave me the option to install the drivers for it. For Windows that is no problem, that will still start and allow me to download and install the drivers. I tried restarting Ubuntu and using the recovery mode, then tried xfix. That didn't work. After searching the Internet a bit I figured out that running EnvyNG would be the easiest way to fix the problem. So I did, and EnvyNG removed fglrx and installed the appropriate NVIDIA driver. Of course this is a serious failure of Ubuntu regarding it's ease of use. It's easy to fix for advanced users, but a newbie would have no idea. Hopefully this will be fixed. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- switching ati for nvidia without removing fglrx causes x to fail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/401322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
