Thanks - I'll look at that but as noted I have added i8042.reset to the 
boot parameters and it is now working fine. The problem appears to be 
kernel initialisation/timing related.
The wireless Logitech mouse and wired keyboard have always been fine and 
haven't stopped anything from working. They just happened to be plugged 
in and hence in the dmesg output when I was logging the problem.
