I just installed karmic alpha 2 on this same laptop. It looks like the original fatal problem (2) is fixed. The installer crashed after update-grub failed with error 1. However after running update-grub by hand the machine could boot fine. With Hardy I couldn't get the machine to boot no matter what I did. I don't have any details on what went wrong with update-grub when run from the installer, since the installer didn't say, sorry. I also didn't try to reproduce problem (1).
