The login manager not starting after a login is a quite generic issue.
It is usually the result of X crashing on logout. These are all video
driver bugs, and users of each driver (nvidia, fglrx, etc) should file
their own bug reports about it against the driver packages, including a
copy of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old file after a failed logout, as well
as a copy of the output of the command lspci -vvnn. I am closing this
report as it has grown too large due to many people experiencing the
same symptom (but not the same bug) commenting. This is also not a kdm
issue anyway.
