I am using right now mandriva cooker, the equivalent of karmic for mandriva, with the same version of KDE (4.2.96) and everything is working fine. So it's seems that it's a kubuntu specific problem. I sincerely hope that it will spread a lot so a little chance to be corrected will exist.
