I upgraded from Hardy on an Asus EEEPC 1000HE, and volume was fine at that point.
Once I started using Karmic, I could barely hear anything at all. This condition exists when using either headphones or speakers despite everything being cranked to the max under the PulseAudio mixer and the Alsa mixer.
