Maybe the answer is found here? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1142010 after an upgrade the "phonon-backend-xine" package is not installed (upgraded from hardy to intrepid to jaunty here, gnome ubuntu, package was not installed), maybe it is installed if you do a fresh install?
