I know support requests do not belong to bug reports but for the sake of 
keeping relevant information in the same place, changing the #defopts= 
... line in /boot/grub/menu.list does not work: update-grub restores the 
configuration. Did something change in grub in karmic and how does one 
permanently remove the splash option?

In the meantime it can be done at boot by pressing "e" and then... well, 
I think grub has inline documentation.
