I don't have easy access to a non x86/x86-64 platform that is supported by ubuntu-vm-builder (essentially, hardy on lpia); however, I have confirmed that the version of ubuntu-vm-builder in proposed, 0.4-0ubuntu0.4, correctly detects the host architecture for i386 and amd64 systems, so there's no sign of a regression on the primary platforms here.
