The correct way to change the opening ledger is by right-clicking the account, select Edit account... and in the dialog select the General tab and change the opening balance, and then press Ok. It is not advisable to modify the opening balance yourself on the ledger. I just tried this on the CVS version and it works ok, running Kubuntu Jaunty.
