@ danielTo say that this happens with 'every' system, is just not true. Just click the right mouse button in Windows, KDE or Openbox and this behaviour doesn't happen; nothing is automatically selected. I have not tried Apple OSX or XFCE environments, however. This is actually only a problem with Gnome. If you try this in firefox, it doesn't happen, so its not that it can't be easily fixed.
