Unfortunately, it didn't help. The system boots fine until starting X. After a long while the screen fills with garbage and grows brighter. More garbage... As far as I understand it from the comments, the driver isn't able to initialize the I2C communication with the monitor. At least the vesa driver cannot find a suitable screen mode and thus exits. The intel driver just aborts early. Testing the device with a different operating system (Windows, Knoppix) indicates that the hardware is in working order. An older Ubuntu version (7.10) installs and works. Would it be possible to check the parts of the code concerning i2c inside the intel driver?
