Stefan,
Oops (red face).. I have been using Synaptic (and not installing many
packages lately) and forgot about apt-get update. That got me the
new code and it works perfectly.

The global.conf mismatch was due to an (reallY) old dosemu.bin in a 
directory in my PATH. When I deleted that, all was well. Running sudo
had a PATH which does not include that directory.
