Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip

After having worked fine in 9.04 and earlier, my scanner no longer works
out of the box with current Karmic. When I launch xsane, I get a dialog
saying "No devices detected", which I must dismiss by clicking the Close
button. Printing seems to work fine, but I can't scan.

The permissions on the device are:

crw-rw-r-- 1 root lp 189, 514 2009-06-20 10:20 /dev/bus/usb/005/003

If I change them to be writable by my uid, scanning works.
