I've updated karmic today, and after login in kdm, the wallpaper is staying on 
kdm wallpapers, and nothing is happening...
Login in the console tty, I can see that pdflush is running 100% cpu, but it 
can't be killed

(files and ubuntu-bug generated report is made on same pc with jaunty...
because the desktop is not accessible under karmic anymore...)
