Public bug reported:

To reproduce, follow the instructions in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile#Alternate%20Build%20Method:%20The
%20Old-Fashioned%20Debian%20Way. Base it on the 'generic' kernel
(2.6.28-9)

Enable PAE (CONFIG_X86_PAE=y) through menuconfig.

After reboot to the new kernel, suspend stops working. Trying to suspend
causes X to crash and after it restarts suspend no longer does anything
except lock the screen.

No error messages in dmesg, /var/log/messages, X.log.0

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
