I can continue on Atex's problem since I have the same foomatic-rip problem. My experimentation shows that it appears limited to HPIJS & foomatic; I can produce this error on both an HP OfficeJet d135 & an HP Photosmart C3180.
It also appears to go beyond the scope of Inkscape, I was able to reproduce the error with any PDF in Evince. The work arounds that worked for me were: (1) using the gutenprint drivers instead, or (2) resizing the page to 8.5x11 inches. To produce the error in Inkscape, change the document properties to 5x7inches and print using HPIJS. To produce the error in Evince, open any PDF and in File->Print Setup->Paper Size->Manage Custom Sizes, make a 5x7inch page then print. In some cases, 3 lines of text output are on the page.
