I would have much less of a problem with most of these solutions (Dropping messages, summarizing as "5 notifications from application-X, or dramatically shortening the time messages are available) if there was a proper notification history ( http://bugs.launchpad.net/notify- osd/+bug/382094 ), where I could look back and see what I missed. (Provided of course there was some indication of me missing something...)
