I think I'm actually on 6.1 already - I'm not actually sure how to
confirm that, all the software shown in the package manager just
displays the component versions, so I can't see how to verify the
version number of the distribution.

Regardless, when I run the update manager just to update what I do have,
I get a msg box that says:

 Not all updates can be installed
 Run a distribution upgrade, to install as many updates as possible.
 This can be caused by an incomplete upgrade, unofficial software packages, or 
by running a development version.
---

I'm not running a development version, but I have installed a couple of
extra packages to get Beryl running - so it's possible that's what's
causing this.  When I select the "Distribution Upgrade" button, that's
when I'm told that it's can't calculate the upgrade.
