I've done a bit of reading and I think this is a memory leak bug in the intel driver. I've been using the driver in UXA mode and recently upgraded to the "optimal" driver in the guide in the forums. (Which means I probably shouldn't be reporting bugs)
I found when I have corruption my memory is full and swap is half full. When I restart X, memory usage returns to a sensible level and corruption disappears.
