Yes it's reproducible, after startup you have to authenticate the first time you plug-in the device, afterwards it mounts automatically, but read-only again. To reproduce install jaunty and upgrade to karmic, but it worked after the update so it must have been some of the following ones. I get this issue with my sandisk card reader and my sandisk mp3 player which worked fine before, I don't have other devices to test.
