After getting feedback from the linux kernel bugzilla, I worked around my timeout errors by disabling media detection polling. I'd rather have a working drive than auto-mounting.
'hal-disable-polling --device /dev/sr0' (assuming your device is /dev/sr0) Thankfully, this stays in effect permanently (even with reboot) until it is changed and the command nicely tells you the file it creates to make the config change.
