Very funny work-around for my wife's Dell Pavilion DV3:

!sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
At end, I added this:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
Then, save and reboot.

Music, finally!  Lol,  model=dell-m4-1.

Okay, it must be that this Dell model has the same audio chipset as my wife's 
notebook.
Good thing for me too!

Hopefully, the alsa folks will eventually catch up to the new HP
notebooks.
