I have had a similar problem. My external USB drive absolutely cannot be loaded
in UBUNTU version 8.04 and version 9.04.
In fact, version 9.04 does not even DETECT the external USB hard drive.

In order to have access to my USB external hard drive, I have to use
version 7.04.

I wonder just what "improvements" were inserted, and what "old" code was
removed in order to make versions 8.04 and 9.04 apparently totally
incapable of detecting and loading my external USB hard drive.

So for "abandoned" version of UBUNTU, because it is so superior to the
newer versions.

But I will definitely try the next new release, because perhaps those
wonderful folks who know so much more than I do, will have fixed this
persistent bug that appeared with version 8.04 and persists in the
latest version.
