Public bug reported: ========= The problem ========= While dist-upgrading edgy => feisty (22. Jan. 07), initrd-2.6.17 (and initrd-2.6.15) was empty (0 B).
========= research ========= After trying update-initrd and/or update-lilo (I don't know for shure what it was exactly), I was told that the new udev needs kernel version 2.6.19 and higher. That seems to be the reason for the empty initrd. ========== what happened ========== No initrd means that lilo won't install a new MBR any more - with all the concequences. My solution was to uninstall all old linux-image-* packages. After that, the system booted normally with 2.6.20. This bug isn't critical, because the old MBR remains intact. But it prevents users from using either the 2.6.20 or any other custom kernel. I recommend at least to show an info box before dist-upgrading. I'm sorry that I can't post any debug information, because I thought of posting this comment *after* all the steps above. But I hope it will help nevertheless. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- initrd-2.6.17 empty after Edgy => Feisty upgrade https://launchpad.net/bugs/80996 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
