Just hit this in Karmic with 2.27.2. Sent a message to someone on Empathy, but could not read their replies. Suspiciously checked Gmail chat logs, and the messages were definitely there. Later saw that they had sent me a message about an hour earlier, but Empathy showed no indication of anything happening.
