Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

The acpi-support package is not involved with the screen locking policy;
this would seem to be a screensaver issue.  You don't mention whether
you're using Ubuntu or another variant, so assuming gnome-screensaver.

However, I'm not able to reproduce this problem here; closing the lid on
my laptop correctly locks the screen.  In your case, does the
screensaver activate without locking the screen, or does the screensaver
not activate at all?

Please post the output of the following commands:
$ gconftool-2 -R /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock
$ gconftool-2 -R /apps/gnome-screensaver
