The reason for the continuing problems are now known. There is still a bug in libmsn which affects people who did not fill out their birthyear and Country during registration on msn/ wlm. Information can be found here:

I don't know if a fix is on the way, but after it is fixed in the lib, I believe the wlm-plugin in pidgin and kopete need to be aware of this too.
