I added:

options snd-intel8x0 enable=1

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, rebooted, and everything *finally*
worked, so the issue is resolved for me.

Seems like this kind of thing shouldn't be necessary, though --
shouldn't the system figure this out on install, or, assuming I mucked
things up somehow after the install, after I purge and reinstall alsa
and friends?  Is it getting confused by the sound capabilities of my
bttv (snd_bt87x), and not able to choose which one should be enabled,
maybe?
