Oh, sorry, I didn't really realize the bug was the same (and I read this bug description too... must have more coffe ;) )
About --install-layout=deb, it doesn't seem to be needed, as the maintainer explicitly specify all the destination, and there's no file on /usr/local/. Indeed I prefer to change all the occurrence of "python2.5" with python, instead of "python2.6"... It seems to me much more general.
