maxcpus=1 does not help. I just reinstalled my laptop from minicd. I booted the installer with maxcpus=1 and double checked that even after the install the kernel would boot with that option. I installed a few packages, installed nvidia restricted driver. rebooted and /sbin/init was gone, so next bootup failed.
