I believe you are mistakenly trying to use the System Monitor to update
or install software. The System Monitor is designed to show you what
programs are currently running, and how many resources they are using.
To update software, use the Update Manager under System>Administration.
To install software, use Add/Remove under Applications, or Synaptic
Package Manager under System>Administration.
If this is not your problem, please provide a more detailed description
of what you are doing, what you expect should happen, and what is
happening instead.
