I found a quazi workaround.

Install ndiswrapper using Build Install.

Reboot

Activate b43legacy under Hardware Manager

Reboot

This made so I could connect to open networks at full speed. There is
no encryption support however. So far I have not been able to get the
encryption working with ndiswrapper.

It seems b43legacy initializes the device and ndiswrapper takes over
from there. I don't know if that is what is happening, but it seems to
be.

Hopefully the Ubuntu team can get this working without ndiswrapper!
