HI, I have exactly the same problem on kubuntu 9.04. I've never got something like that in previous versions. 2Gigs of memory are eat up like nothing by just running standard programs are always used to (FF, thunderbird, skype, pidgin or kopete). I have no idea what echoing 1 2 3 to drop caches does but it definitely freed up about 1GB of memory immediately.
