I have 2 computers where I experienced this problem (a Lenovo 500
ThinkPad and a Dell desktop. I tried your solution on the Lenovo.

When I ran the first command (sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list) and
entered my pass word, the terminal hung up displaying only the cursor.
When I entered another command with the terminal in this mode, it just
echoed the command I entered. To get the terminal back at the command
level I have to close the terminal and reopen.
