I should add that I have also managed to install Ubuntu 9.04 by upgrading from 8.10 (booting from a USB stick with debug=mount also works, but I didn't use it for the install). It would still be nice if the boot process were fixed for 9.04; it can't be too hard since it was working in 8.10.
