I'm having the same problem... this has began to occur since I made the update to ubuntu 9.04 from ubuntu 8.10. I think that the problem it's the new version of rhythmbox (the 0.12.0)
I'm using a Dell vostro 1310 and The play, stop, next and previous multimedia keys aren't working. I have looked with the terminal and ubuntu does recognize those keys when I press them, but rhythmbox doesn't respond to them. By the way, the volume multimedia keys work perfect. In the keyboard shortcuts configuration those multimedia keys are configured in the right way. Thank you very much for your attention and your useful help!...
