Same symptoms here with a Dell laptop (Precision M6400) with Kubuntu AMD64:
- no sound with the default kernel in Jaunty (2.6.28-11-generic)
- perfect sound with the default kernel in Intrepid (2.6.27-11-generic) ( I
still have installed, easy to choose upon boot)

I tried to install Pulseaudio, and reached a point where there is some
activity reported with playback volumes of the padevchooser systray icon
(apt-get install padevchooser + Atl+F2 "padevchooser"), but without any
sound (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1136724)

Also,it is not clear to me if a stock Kubuntu is using pulseaudio or
not, and if there is any gain to use it.

Cheers,

Aurélien.
