For me this is what happens: Directly after boot, the nm starts connecting but it takes long time and fails in the end (password window pops up). I have to disable wireless through the applet and enable it again. Only then I get a connection. My card is also Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG in a hp Compaq 6510b. I connect to a WPA2 Personal network and there is no other connection or network hardware except for Ethernet. It works fine on a Mint 5r1 Livecd (based on ubuntu 8.04).
