  I've just tested with the 2.8.28-12.43 from proposed with

resample-method = trivial

and

default-fragment-size-msec = 5

and I was able to trigger the problem with rhythmbox stopping and just getting 
constant loud crackling and no music
out and this doesn't get going again.  This happened while there was some 
reasonably heavy CPU (update-manager doing its stuff) - but I've never had that 
behaviour on an earlier kernel as previously mentioned.

I'm back on 2.6.28-11 #42 and with both of those resample-method and
default-fragment-size-msec set as above, and I'm still getting the
occasional crackle - i.e. back to the original bug.
