Ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10

Laptop Acer Aspire 5051 wxmi

Hardware sound:
cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [SB             ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
                      HDA ATI SB at 0xd0000000 irq 16

Without head phones:
By default the sound doest work.
The workarround is to open volume control proprieties and manually enable the 
surround to have sound.

Using head phones:
By default the sound can be heared normally trought headphones.
But if I enable the surround option, I can hear the sound trought laptop 
speakers and headphones.
