uninstalling the unstripped versions of those libraries, installing the
standard ones and rebooting the computer worked for me. (i believe
365638 could be the same bug as this.)

maybe vlc dependencies need to be adjusted so it depends on libraries
that work and conflicts with the unstripped versions. i haven't bothered
reinstalling the unstripped ones since i got it working or tried playing
any dvds yet so not totally sure why the unstripped ones were installed
to begin with and what they were needed for.
