I have been using 2.6.29.1 for a couple of days and the general
impression is: better though far from good. The freezes just seem to be
much less frequent (they still happen on my machine). It might be
possible to work several days in a row without a single freeze with this
version.

As this phenomenon is not ATI-specific (I have an Intel i915, for
instance), I am skeptical whether it could be a driver issue. Still, it
may be possible that these are just various issues having common symptom
- a freeze. Well, perhaps it's not a bug but a feature - a sort of Win98
First Edition stability mode (they might call it "Win9x Effects") :-]

2.6.29.2 is next in the line.
