I had the same problem, but after some research on the web I think this is 
connected to NetworkManager problem that was in Ubuntu 8.10 - slow system start 
up due to long lasting network configuring. To resolve that previous problem I 
erased/commented out everything in /etc/network/interfaces. As it seems that 
causes some problems with network configuration that slows down Firefox, cause 
then I added:
auto lo
auto eth0
auto eth1
back to /etc/network/interfaces Firefox doesn't hang any more.

So my advice is to check Your /etc/network/interfaces and if it's empty
an an 'auto <interface_name>' for every interface U have and it may
help.
