I think this bug is most likely the duplicate of #348332 and #351990. After I installed kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.2/ all problems with compositing are gone. It has been 4 hours since I enabled Desktop effects and so far so good.
