ftr, taking this patch downstream (e.g. in distros) makes sense if its a cross-driver issue (whether its a driver issue at all can probably only be tested on Mac/Windows using the same hardware; if you experience similar network problems when scanning, then i would think its a hardware issue - anyone can test that?)
