The same thing here on kubuntu 9.04 with desktop effects on (Radeon Mobility X1600). Sometimes it hangs while loading kde, sometimes after 30 minutes, sometimes after 1 hour...
I had the screen going black and I also had the screen freezing without going black. PC locks completely, so it is not possible to switch to console. The only way out is hard reboot. The system itself is working. I can ssh to it from another PC.
