plasma-widget-network-manager from kubuntu-experimental behaves a LOT
better. On initially connecting, I entered the WEP key and checked
"connect automatically", and it asked for the connection details a
second time. Patiently I added them in, and lo and behold, connectivity.
It also connects automatically on logging in, which is nice.

So not 100% ideal behaviour, but FAR better than the out-of-the-box
setup.
